This sounds great to me, too! Thanks for coming up with the idea, Chris....

Subject: [TMG] Wish List: Sorting Tags
I would like to suggest consideration of scrapping the Sort Date method of
putting event tags in the required order in favor of "Move Up" "Move Down"
arrows. These are available on the Citations screen and in various other
places in TMG. I believe their use on the Person View would have big
advantages:
- it would no longer be necessary to remember what the sort date of a tag
is, a significant problem on a busy PV, often resulting in opening and
closing tags just to see what the sort date is;
- it would avoid the problem of an alteration in a sort date having an
effect on tag order, and hence on narratives, of other persons connected as
witnesses;
- it would be possible to move just one tag to the required place without
having to change sort dates of several other tags, which can sometimes
happen;
- there would be no need to open a tag to move it to the required position;
- it would be much quicker.
As I have become more experienced in using TMG, I am finding that I have to
use sort dates on virtually every PV. Often there is a witness tag in the
wrong place, but I cannot change the sort date on that tag as it would upset
another PV, so I end up changing the sort dates of a bunch of tags to fit
correctly around the witness tag. Even on the simplest PV, I nearly always
have to enter a sort date on the death and burial tags to move them up to
appear after the birth and baptism tags in order to produce narratives in
accordance with NEHG Register standards.
Another example of where "Move Up" "Move Down" would really make a
difference is when using non-person PVs such as in Diana Begeman's Census
System. A page of census records often runs to a large number of records
(tags) all with the same date, creating a huge amount of work in entering
sort dates if one wants to order them alphabetically or whatever. With "Move
Up" "Move Down", this would be a snap.

Chris Sackett
