Thank you Lee, and everyone that has responded.

I have Swedish ancestors that had their birth surname (father's given name
with son or dotter appended), informal surnames names that were used in the
American census and local records, and surnames that were taken as they
desired. Keeping straight the correct surname for a woman after marriage is
difficult if at sometime her husband had changed his surname, but I don't
have the information of when or a marriage document. And, with their habit
of changing surnames without legal documentation to say when makes it
necessary to have all possible surnames available in the pick list.

To solve the who is who I've used the Reference field to assign a unique
reference number (Ahnentafel related decimal numbering system) to an
individual with a proven relationship to me and only have those individuals
in the data set. Non proven relationship individuals are in another data
set in the same project. Most of the time I sort the pick list by reference
number, or surname if I want surnames.

I do however, want the pick list to reflect all possible surnames. I will
use the Name-Marr and suppress the Tag in all reports and use name
variations and nick names where necessary and create a custom tag where a
woman wants to have a different surname than her husband after marriage.

Bob, as to the Journal report, I haven't looked at that yet.

This is the normal method in the genealogical community.

Yes, this would seem to be the case. On the
other hand, as you note, if the wife's married
name is obvious from the remainder of the
narrative then there is no need for the sentence "her married name was ...."

There are various ways to handle the situation
depending on the situation and your
preferences. If you accept to have the Name-Marr
Tag added then you can choose not to print _any_
such Tags in reports by de-selecting the
Name-Marr Tag on the Tags tab of the [Options]
window of the Report Definition Screen. This is
my preferred way of working. With this method, I
can search the Picklist or Project Explorer for
the wife by her married name but not print the "married name was" sentence.

The above does not provide for the inclusion in a
report of the wife's married name in the odd
situations. One way would be to create the
report and then edit it in your word processor
for those few cases where the sentence is
needed. This tends to be a nuisance if you have
more than one or two and even that few may still
be aggravating. For such situations, you might
create a Custom Name Tag (say "Name-Md" or
Name-Wife") to be added to those wives whose
married name is not obvious. This would have to
be added to the wife manually, but it is a
one-time thing and thus reports would not have to
be edited to add the sentence.
