And a slightly different twist...
I've just tried to do a backup via File>Backup and it got as far as asking
if I wanted to overwrite the existing backup file and hung TMG (no check for
update available).
The only difference from normal was to go into File > Preferences> Advanced
first and change the drive letter to where my external Maxtor hard drive had
changed itself too.
This is the first backup I've tried to do since intalling 6.08 (I've been
busy elsewhere in my life<g>)
Once TMG had restarted, it worked just fine (without the change to the drive
letter being necessary as that had "taken").

I think Gary has the right of it. I have been testing my backup on the
computer where I created it and making a new one if it didn't work. That
always worked, apparently as I did it from the File menu and not exiting
via the "x".
