I have two options that, together, resolve this problem for me.
1. I have a HP scanjet 4670, perhaps a little more "luggable" than portable.
Works great with my Thinkpad and is a joint home flatbed and high quality
instrument that I can take into a research place with me.
2. I use a Kodak DX4690 digital camera. It's 4mgp but I think that a 3MGP is
probably OK. I have very good quality Photos, and Portraits as well as some
documents that I have been able to OCR with the results. An absolute 'must'
for anyone considering this option is to read the 'how to' at
http://www.rideau-info.com/genealogy/digital/
He gave me the confidence and techniques to be 'successful'.
PS: If you go this route, I also have a desktop monopod, not a tripod' that
I got from Kodak for about $23. It's made by Davis Sanford ad called a Copy
Stand 1. Just take the time to set it up on a table/desk and then start
setting originals under it and go. Natural lighting, from a window, produces
the best results.

Subject: OT: Portable scanner
I'm going to be going to a couple of family reunions this summer. I know
some of the people there will have photos that I'd like to get a copy of.
Has anyone purchased a "portable" scanner that they've taken to a reunion
(or something similiar) and are happy with it or what do you do?
Thanks
Tami Dolan
