Lee,
Are you sure you don't have EXTERNAL PICTURES selected under Project Data
files? My last backup was 7,875 KB without external images. I selected
external Pictures and it is now 283,367 KB and instead of the usual about 30
seconds to run, it took over 5 minutes to run. That's how I first realized
that a change had been made, but I couldn't tell you which version it was
that made the change.
I wouldn't want to wait that long for a backup when I tend to do several a
day when I am doing a lot of data entry like I was yesterday.

Do a backup, then select File=>Maintenance=>Optimize. Now do another
backup using the same options as the first backup. The second will
probably be smaller. The pre-optimized backup will include all data
that you have changed or deleted as well as some minor administrative
data used by TMG and is re-created as needed.
