I would also consider purchasing one that you can remove the drive from such

that I have. I also have an extra tray, so I have two hard drives, one at
home and one at another location, that I rotate every month.

I use an external hard drive to backup my TMG data, actually two external
hard drive one at work and one at home. I must have a couple dozen
generations of back-ups. I hope that you are considering backing up to an
external disk since they are subject to the same things that cause internal
drives to crash.
