Hi Wayne,
I bought an external Hard Drive (HDD) about 3 months ago - it's large enough
to hold All my data as is - meaning I copy the data files (e.g. TMG project
files) without compression so the files are directly accessible from the
external HDD without restoring (... and I'm nowhere near full capacity on
the HDD) - and I've never looked back

I use it together with a neat little freebie program called Karen's
Replicator which compares files and copies any 'newer files' automatically
from a Source folder to a designated Destination folder - this may be on the
same drive or, as in my case, on the external HDD (which I usually keep
connected to the PC).

Karen's Replicator is available here:
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp

Within the program you can set up many Schedules for the contents of
different folders etc to be compared/copied at different times (with
possible frequencies from 1 minute to a number of months)

For example, having my PC running 24/7, I have my whole My Documents folder
as well as my uncompressed TMG projects And my TMG backups folder
compared/copied daily late at night, while others which don't change as
often, like my TMG Exhibits folder, weekly.

After data entry I either manually copy the files to the external HDD or run
the relevant scheduled 'job(s)' in Karen's Replicator manually.

And yes, I also still do my backups in other ways - but this gives me
considerably more peace of mind - if I do forget to backup away from my
internal HDD - my PC will do it at least once a day all by itself <G>

Just my 2 cents,
Astrid
