I really like my external drive. It's not a failsafe solution by any means,
but it's great as an "if I ever had 10 minutes to get out of the house"
solution. I got a WD external that has a card reader built into the top, so
I can also copy data directly from either of the hard drives to my SD or
compact flash cards. I back up my entire hard drive to the external once a
week. If I've changed a lot, I try to do it more often. I'm a little
paranoid as my internal hard drive is now four years old; it shows no signs
of wear yet, but by the time it does, of course, it's usually too late. :\

The rest of my backups are situational -- in other words, what I backup and
where and how often I switch it around depends on how important it is to me,
how important it is to someone else, and how much I think I will actually
*care* about having access to it following a true disaster. In the case of
my genealogy, my Palm has become my third backup, and I frequently backup my
project files to GedStar Pro. My Palm is always on or near my person. So, if
the hard drive ever goes, I'll have the external. If some freak disaster
destroys both of those, it's almost certainly because the house is down
around my ears, and in that case I'll presumably at least have my Palm. And
if the handbasket is so full that even my Palm is gone, then either I'm dead
or I've got troubles so immense that losing my genealogy data will be
trivial by comparison. ;)

If you're more attached to it than I am, though, you might consider
occasionally copying one of your TMG backups to a CD or up to a remote web
server. If you've got GMail, you could possibly email it to yourself (cheap
storage solution). Just make sure you keep the account active, so it's not
deleted.

Subject: [TMG] External Hard Drives

Hello All, I am contemplating storing all of my families history on an
external hard drive as I have had two crashes and was close to losing
information that I could not have replaced. Are there any tips I should be
aware of before proceding. Tks- Wayne
