As a carry-over from the old Roots III system, I generally use the first
seven characters of the file name to identify the "connection" to the
TMG data base, and now add on the material that I feel relevant such as
individual names (surname first) and dates. The first character
identifies the type of exhibit - for example P for portrait, S for
grave-Stone photo, M for miscellaneous, F for family groups, E for
evidence (copies of documents) and so forth. The remaining five
characters are digits identifying the primarily connected person or
source by number (I have elected not to change person or source numbers,
nor have more than 99,999 people (or sources!) in my data base. By whim
I added a character after the E's which, in retrospect, is relatively
meaningless (hey, is anyone perfect?).
An example is "P00029 McCardell Jenise Marie ca 1985.JPG", a portrait of
niece Jenise.
I recently have diverged from that system for some new entries, since
the more modern systems are not limited to the old 8.3 file naming
system. In these cases I use the same name as that I have in my general
graphics file (my TMG-oriented images are separately stored and sized
and resolution-set for display in both SS and for printing).
I certainly do not make a point of advocating my system, especially
since it requires one to remember never to renumber individuals, and
since it was kind of forced on me having grown from the old Roots III
system.
