Kevin's original question, although I don't understand what he meant by
being interested in ZIP codes from "the decade earlier" {than the
1960s}. Is Kevin interested in (one- or two-digit) postal zones within
the larger cities? If so, I suggest looking at individual telephone
directories or city directories from the time period of interest. As I
recall, the very first ZIP codes often mimicked the earlier postal
zones in their last two digits.
