Subject: [VAMONTGO] DIARY OF JOSEPHUS NEWTON DAVIS AT NEW RIVER SITE
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 22:43:07 -0400

A cousin sent me the following URL, which is the diary of
Josephus Newton Davis.
www.ls.net/~newriver/misc/jndavis.htm

The diary contains so many references to so many families,
regions, religion and so forth that I cannot cite specifics, and
thus will cross post this message hoping some descendants will
find a reference to family.

I can, however, identify some folk that connect to my family
line, which is why my cousin sent me the link:

The Jacob Lorton in this piece is the stepfather of Mary Elswick,
Archibald Thompson's wife. He married Lydia Unknown Elswick
after the death of her first husband, John Elswick, II. Davis
says this about their son, Israel, b. 1749

" . . . But Israel Lorton who was the captain of the Company
with which my grandfather enlisted on his return from the war
pretending to settle the business for my grandmother got hold of
the titles he had for a most splendid tract of land on Meadow
Creek Montgomery County, Virginia. "

Two other references that I can connect to my Thompson line are
Moses Scaggs and an Archibald Whitt. Garrett Davis, raised by
Moses Scaggs, is said to be his only heir; if this is the Moses
Skaggs, brother to Longhunters and other Skaggs siblings, then he
was not around when Moses died, or at least he's not mentioned in
the Moses Skaggs Estate Suit in Green Co., Ky.

But these are only small references in this vast history of a
remarkable man.
