First School in Governor's Right

The first school of which I have any knowledge in the
Underhill section known as Governor's Right was held in
a private home in 1840. A woman came into the neighbor-
hood who was capable of teaching the three R's, and the
home became the school room.
At recess, the childen played an Indian game which
consisted of taking axes and chasing each other about the
place.

Rawson)

>From St. Johnsbury Caledonia, October 25, 1895:

Young woman or young man: If you were thrown upon your
own resources today have you any one thing THOROUGHLY
learned whereby you could earn a living? If not, NOW is the
time to prepare yourself for what may come. Business or
shorthand, training brings the quickest returns of any kind
of education. It is a direct means of getting a living, or taking
care of ones self. Furthermore, it is less expensive in the time
and money than any other kind of training whereby one can
earn a living with the head instead of the hands. Our catalog
may be had for the asking, and pupils may enter any day.

Johnsbury, Vt.
