>From New Hampshire Sentinel, May 7, 1863:
A STUMP EXTRACTOR- Mr. F.L. Howe, an ingenious
mechanis, from Woodstock, Vt. is the inventor of a new
machine for extracting stumps, for which he has obtained a
patent from the U.S. Government. Messrs. Howe and Murdock
are the proprietors. We understand that an application of 160
pounds power will raise 165 tons weight. The machine has
been very successfully applied in Vermont, and judging from
the exhibition of the model, we should pronounce it a perfect
thing.
