A related aside: These folks were often tinkers, i.e. craftsmen in
metal work, usually calling around for pots, pans and sap pails to
repair for housewives and men who sugared off. The phrase "not worth a
tinker's dam" referred to a little dam of clay positioned below the
repair site to keep excess solder from running off the utensil under
repair. Heat from the soldering iron or torch made the clay dry and
crumbly and it was brushed off after the repair was made and the dammed,
or excess, solder saved for reuse. Dick in N
