Burglary on October 13
It happend on the night fo October 13, 1905. The stranger
was seen in the early evening going up the street. People
wondered at the time who he was. Later it was known that
he spent the early part of the night at the home of Weeks
Graves and while there he stole several blankets from the
porch.
His purpose was revealed about 3 a.m. when he attemp-
ted to break into a safe at the store owned by Jennison and
Gallup. His attempt was unsuccessful and he was shot
through a registar hole directly over the safe by one Eugene
Trudeau.
In his pocket the stranger had a bottle of nitro Glycerine
which the bullet just missed and on his person he had a fine
set of burglary tools plus $68.50 in cash. He attempted to
muffle the sounds of his safe cracking with the balnkets
which he soaked in the creek.
The local photographer took pictures of the body, post
card size, and sold them for five cents a piece. On the day
after the funeral, a strange woman registered at "Portland
House". That night lights were seen in the town at a late
hour, and it is said that the body of the burglar was removed.
His identity was never known.
The town reports show that the money from the burglars
pocket was kept until 1933 and at that time, the amount plus
interest, was turned into the school account.

Robbery
A notorious thief being tried for his life, confessed the
robbery for which he was charged. The judge thereupon
directed the jury to find him guilty upon his confession.
The jury after putting their heads together, brought in
the verdict, "not Guilty".
The judge order them to reconsider it. Again they
brought in their verdict of "not guilty"
"By what reason?" asked the jude. The foreman replied:
"There's reason enough for we all know he is one of the
greatest liars in the world."
