The following are excerpts taken from the Child's Gazetteer - Essex
Caledonia and local newspapers.
1886
April 13 - Wallace William STEVENS died April 8 at the age of 56. He
lived in what is today Duval's house. He was our Town Clerk from 1849
to 1851 and 1856 to 1866.
Charles COOK has taken possession of the farm known as the J. J.
Holbrook farm. Elwin HOLBROOK moving off.
August 24 - Charles ESTES has purchased the Howell farm and taken
possession.
December 24 - Bloomfield has a post office at this time and the
Postmaster is Henry W. BURBANK.. The Star Mail Routes and Stage Lines
come through Bloomfield.
1887

July 20 - Born in Bloomfield, July 2nd to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond FULLER, a
daughter.
November 29 - The first telephone has arrived in this area and is
located in Hutchins' Drugstore. it is a pay station.

February 22 - I could not resist this one: Crazy Jones was in town last
week. No larger than ever, just as foolish!
1889 (Democrat)
February 27 - Miss Dell C. BURBANK, daughter of the late Henry W.
Burbank, has received the appointment of Post Mistress. A fit
appointment.
March 13 - Town Meeting - Moderator, E. W. SPENCER; Clerk and Treasurer,
W. B. PERKINS; Selectmen: Milton COOK, Nelson, SNOW, Henry FULLER;
Overseer, William R. SILVER; Aid, Milo R. B. BLODGETT, Edson HOLDEN, W.
R. SILVER, Jr.; Listers, W. R. SILVER, M. C. FULLER, Henry A. GARDNER;
Road Commissioner, Charles F. ESTES, H. N. FRENCH, R. G. BULLER; Members
of County Board of Education, Rev. A. GREGORY; 1st Constable, H. A.

April 17 - Charles COOK, one of our honored town men, died on the 5th at
the residence of his sister, Mrs. C. R. BLODGETT at Littleton, aged 69.
His remains were taken to Campton, NH for burial.
December 18 - Cromwell, Nebraska (Dec. 11) Some unknown person or
persons shot and immediately killed C. T. PULSIFER, a grain dealer, this
evening while he was on his way from his office . Mr. PULSIFER was
formerly a resident of Bloomfield. About 25 years ago (1864?) he and
his brother Frank went to Nebraska where they have since resided.
1890 (Democrat)
February 26 - There were 27 births, 11 marriages and 17 deaths in
Bloomfield in the year ending December 1889..
May 13 - Miss Katie FULLER teaches in District three. She has thirty
one scholars. School in District two is taught by Miss Stella
MacFARLAND who has been the teacher the two previous terms.
July 23 - Mrs. JACKSON, an Indian woman who for a number of yers had
lived in this vicinity, died quite suddenly last week..
1891 (From Island Pond Herald)
January 8 - Miss Dora Schoff is to commence a school in District four
this week.
April 7 - We heard today Melvin FULLER and A. LURVEY have made over 700
pounds of maple sugar thus far this season. Maple "honey" was selling
at $1.00 a gallon.
April 14 - The selectmen have bought a lot for the prospective town
house of Fan WILLITTE.. Purchase price, $350.00. Some are not quite
satisfied with the location.
July 14 - Miss Nellie BENNETT is giving lessons to a small class in
physical culture as it is taught in Emerson College of Oratory, Boston.
August 11 - Mrs. Betsy FULLER, aged 82, is piecing a bed quilt
containing over 10,000 separate pieces.
1893
November 8 - In Bloomfield, Octobere 31, Rev. THURSTON, conducting the
services, James W. FRENCH and Miss Bertha J. SCOTT were married.
1894
March 18 - I. G. LUNT sold his house to Mrs. George DOLLY and last
Saturday sold his household goods at auction.
April 4 - The number of births, deaths, and marriages in this town for
the year ending December 3, 1893 were as follows: Births, 14; Deaths,
7; Marriages, 8.
May 9 - On Wednesday evening as a little 4 year old daughter of R.
GEANT, living in B. A. BOWKER's tenement house, was playing at the back
of the house, she fell into a well cutting a gash in her head, so she
fell down the water dead, where she was found soon after, the boards
having been in a very dangerous condition.
June 18 - Hon. William Riley SILVER died at his home July 13. He was
born in this town March 17, 1820 and was buried by Rev. R. DINSMORE,
Sunday at 2 p.m. Judge Silver was the son of Arad and Sophie (NICHOLS)
SILVER, who came to Bloomfield in 1805. (One of a family of 10
children. In 1849 he married Relief BARTLETT, daughter of Adin and
Nancy (CLOUGH) BARTLETT of Bloomfield. He signed the temperance pledge
at the age of ten and never drank a glass of whiskey in his whole life.
He raised eight children, namely: George W., Louise A., William R.,
Alvira E., Henry, Fayette, Alice and Bernie E. Alice married Edson
HOLDEN of town. He served as town representative in 1858-59 and in
1884-5. He was assistsant judge in 1875-76.
1895 (Democrat)
May 24 - Mr. Alger BALDWIN, a much respected citizen of North Stratford
and a former resident of Bloomfield died of pneumonia, Wednesday. He
was 75..
May 24 - A terrible accident occurred last Thursday, May 23. George
BLODGETT, a son of the late Byron L. BLODGETT, was driving a pair of
horses with a large grain roller, and when near the Lewis Lumber Company
stables, his horse somehow became unmanageable by him and threw him
under the roller and he was killed instantly.
1896 (Democrat)
July 1 - Archie TRAVERS and Annie SULLING were married last week,
Friday evening.
July 8 - Herbert MUNN was born on the Ramsey farm, in Lemington, June
27, 1856 and died June 29, 1896 and the age of 40. His boyhood days
were mostly spent in this town. About 1881 he went west and located in
Washington, where he remained for a number of years. In 1885 he
returned east and June 1, 1885 he married Miss Lilla FIELD of
Lancaster. They lived in Boston and vicinity until 1893. Most of the
time he worked for the railroad, first as a fireman and then as an
engineer for the N.Y. and N.E. Railroad. Upon becoming ill he returned
to his boyhood home town to die.
1897 - Island Pond "Herald"
October 8 - Edson HOLDEN gave his annual husking at the old homestead
Friday night. About 100 were present.
October 22 - Ayers TRUFANT has moved his family from the boarding house
into the rent recently occupied by Ed BROOKS in the Finnegan House.
Louis BISHOP has his new house ready for occupancy.
1898 (Island Pond "Herald"
August 19 - A daughter was born August 14th to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel
RAMSEY. (Stella SAVAGE)
October 21 - Winnie NUGENT has purchased the house belonging to Will
WALKER.
October 28 - Hon. W. B. PERKINS died at his home Wednesday morning,
October 15th. He was born in Topsham, Maine a little more than 67 years
ago, and he came to Bloomfield in 1864 as a bookkeeper for the Perkins
and Jackson Lumber Company. He served the town 25 years as town clerk
and also as treasurer and selectman most of the time. He was elected
state senator in 1882 and town representative in 1892.
SPENCER, William B., was born in Minehead (now Bloomfield) August 21,
1827. He was the son of Gratis and Susannah (DEARTH) SPENCER, whom
early history tells us were among the first settlers of the town.
William B. married Cordelia FULLER, January 6th, 1847 and seven children
blessed the union: Ellen C., (Mrs. S. W. HOLBROOK), Edwin W., Amelia L.
(Mrs. A. E. ELLIOTT of Gloucester, Massachusetts), Ada Ann (Mrs. O. C.
STAFFORD), Henry G., Jennie A. (Mrs. E. A. TRAVERS of Errol, New
Hampshire, and Horace A., who was born September 24th, 1865 and who
resides on the homestead on Spencer Hill.
1899 (Island Pond Herald)
February 10 - Milton COOK, a prosperous farmer and highly respected
citizen of this town, died last week, January 30, at 76. The last of a
family of seven children he was born in Campton, NH, and when about 20
came to Bloomfield, commencing to clear up a farm in the woods on
Bloomfield Hill (now called the Traverse Place) in 1849. He soon
located on the farm where he has lived for more than 50 years. He was
the son of Edmund and Clarissa (MITCHELL) Cook. on Decmeber 25, 1845 he
married Marth SHOFF and they had three children: Henry A., Edmund A. and
Jacob Haynes, all deceased. He had a brother Charles, who was also born
in Campton. He was born November 4th, 1818 and had located on a farm he
owns since March 1840.
