Hi Webbsters - Since the list has been so active lately I thought it might be
a good time to once again try to solve the mystery of the two Augustine
Webbs. The history of the lives of the two Augustine's has gotten so intertwined
that it seems nearly impossible to straighten them out. I could sure use some
help.
Augustine1 (my ancestor & possibly the son of Julius Webb who was born in
Spottsylvania VA) served two enlistments during the Rev War. The first
enlistment in 1775/76 at Albermarle Co., and the second in 1781 at Botetourt Co. He
stated in his pension application dated 1832 that he was born in 1755 in Hanover
VA. He said he left VA in 1782 and settled in Fayette Co. KY, then Clark Co,
Shelby Co, and finally Bullitt Co. KY. Land records dated 8 July 1788 show he
and first wife Elizabeth? sold land in Botetourt Co. He and Elizabeth had 4
children, William, Jonathan, Mary(Molly) and Sarah(Sally). He and his
surviving children and grandchildren by Elizabeth are named in son William's will in
Shelby Co. KY dated about 1817. Augustine1 married a second time to Frances Ann
"Franky" Clarke (my ggggrandmother) in 1807 in Shelby Co. KY. He and Franky
had several children: Frances Ann and Elizabeth, and possibly Benjamin and
George Washington. Augustine1 died in 1835 in Bullitt Co. KY, and Fanny,
Benjamin and George W. Webb were among those who purchased items from Augustine1's
estate sale in Bullitt County KY.
Augustine2 was born in Orange Co. VA in 1863, son of William Crittendon Webb
(also born in Spottsylvania VA) and Jane Vivion. He married Lucy Crittenden
(a cousin?) in Culpepper Co. VA in 1788 and went on to have a number of
children all born in VA, some well into the 1800s. According to his father's will,
Augustine2, inherited the family plantation, and apparently lived out his
life with Lucy in Orange County where he is buried.
These are some of the questions I have concerning the two Augustines.
1. Who were they named for? Traditionally children back then were named
after ptjer family members but so far I haven't found an earlier Augustine that
either was related to.
2. Why don't either of them have middle names or initials? If Augustine1's
father is Julius (who didn't have a middle initial either) that would explain
it. But why didn't Augustine2, have a middle name? It appears that most if
not all of William and Jane's children had the middle name of Vivion. Why
would this son and heir be the only one without a middle name or initial. Nowhere,
no time:)
3. How are the two Augustines connected? There must surely be a connection
since some names, such as Millian (which doesn't seem to be too common) shows
up in both Augustines' lines. I believe both Augustine's named their first
sons William. Also, both Julius and William Cr. Webb were born in
Spottsylvania, and owned property in Albemarle and Botetourt Counties, etc. in VA. And
William C.Webb owned land and paid taxes in the same counties where Augustine1
owned land and paid taxes.
If you check the gedcoms for Augustine Webb at Ancestry.com you can see just
how mixed up the two are. Some people show Augustine1 married to Lucy
Crittenden, but list Elizabeth's children. Some show Augustine2 married to Frances
Clarke and list Augustine1 and Elizabeth's children. Augustine1's Rev War
record is shown for Augustine2, etc., etc., etc. Even an early VA history book
said that Augustine2 moved to KYwith his grown children in the late 1700s, when
he and Lucy only got married in 1788. How many grown children could they have
by the late 1700s? And if Augustine and Lucy were living in KY how were all
their children born in VA?
I'd love to hear from anybodyelse who is trying to solve this mystery. Pat
in Ohio
P.S. There was another Augustine Webb who married Caroline Pleasants in
Henrico Co. VA in the late 1700s also. It seems quite possible he is also
connected.
