Dear Kathryn,
We have just completed our first year, and we have 16 kits out for
Y-chromosome testing, and one for mtDNA. We have had two unexpected matches. Of
course, one of the matches was to my line and we still have NO clue where the
connection might have been made. We had one pair that expected to match and didn't.
They weren't really happy about it, but they are reviewing their paper trail
-- it could be a case of Dad married a woman with a kid from her earlier
marriage and bestowed his name on the kid, or some other informal adoption -- not
unusual in the erly 1800s when families just "took in" orphaned kids from
relatives or neighbors.
My goal is to double the number of samples over the next 6 months --
concentrating on recruiting samples from long-documented lines for comparison and
samples from UK families with documentation back to the 16/1700s. My hope is that
as folks see the areas covered by samples and the successful matches, they
will be inspired to join on their own.
I'm pleased with the progress -- especially since I took off about 4-5 months
from active work on it due to my mother's illness. However, with so many
WEBBs in this nation, I think we should have at least 100 samples. So this year,
I am recruiting VERY heavily, using every avenue I can find. Most recently,
I emailed some names I located on the AOL Member Directory and invited them to
join. I may get down to calling folks in the phone book next!
By the way, I'm STILL WAITING for a John & Mary Boone WEBB line sample!
::Smile::
