Hi Andy & List,
Marriages by license were a lot quicker than having to wait for banns to be
read on three Sundays before the wedding.
I have an ancestor who married the same day that he signed the license.
Licenses could be used to get around the problem of opposisition to the
union, you could marry before anyone found out about it.
You could also try looking for a christening about six months after the
wedding, that is another reason to get married before anything shows.
People married in chapels because they were non-conformists, they were
baptists, methodists etc. and didn't follow the Church of England.
There are quite a few marriage licenses around, non-conformist registers can
be more difficult to access.
