Carol, I do not know whether this will help or frustrate! Hopefully, it
might provide a clue for further research. For example, have you obtained
the bounty land warrant papers that possibly were furnished Nathaniel
following his War of 1812 service? If he was dead by the time the law(s) was
passed, his widow may have applied for bounty land.
One Nathaniel WEST of Johnston Co., NC in the early years of Duplin Co., NC,
maybe about 1760 or so (Duplin formed about 1750) went into Duplin and
bought land. I am told by other WEST researchers that Nathaniel eventually
sold out in Duplin and returned to Johnston where he died testate. Since
that is not my line, I have never checked it out.
I don't know whether it would be worthwhile for you to take a look at some
Johnston Co., NC records.
Additionally, I will add that if your WEST families were like mine, they
re-cycled the same given names for generations, so a given name other than
James and William may provide a real clue!
