My great great grandparents emigrated from Hamburg,
Germany in the mid 1840's. John Weiss was born October
16, 1824 and Margaret Heulein was born November 1, 1823,
both in Bavaria in the central part of Germany. John had
completed his military service when both families,
members of the German Reformed Church, decided to
emigrate to America. Soon after landing, John and
Margaret were married, on June 27, 1848. John had the
spelling of their names changed to Wise and Hainline,
though he never liked it. The newly married couple lived
in Manchester, Maryland about five years, when they
joined a wagon train and came down the Ohio on flat
boats. They travelled overland with their wagons from
some point along the Illinois land to Woodland Township
in Fulton County, Illinois. They lived there until their
deaths, his in 1901 and hers in 1896. They had eleven
children, eight daughters and three sons, from about
1849 to about 1866. All married and farmed in the area
and their names were:
1.Barbara, who married Henry Hetzel of Table Grove
2.Margaret, who married John Parr
3.Elizabeth, who married John Swartz
4.Lydia, who married Charles Krembling
5.Henry, who lived in Summum, Illinois
6.Amelia, who married Kester W. Atherton
7.Mary Magdalene, who married John Atherton (my
grandparents)
8.Samuel, a farmer of Vermont Twp., Fulton Co., IL
9.Rebecca, who married Grant Ward, a carpenter
10.Daniel, a farmer who married (1) Eva J. Brown and
(2) Dora E. Horner, widow of William Horner and daughter
of James M. Onion, pioneer of Fulton County.
11.Sarah, who married John Smith of Pleasant Twp.
If any descendants of these children are researching
this family, please let me hear from you. My "brick
wall" is the Weiss and Heulein families before coming to
Illinois. Some clues are needed to get any further back.
